USMC Spouse of 23 Years
Okinawa, Japan
Meet Jillian Cortez.
For more than two decades as a Marine Corps spouse, Jillian Cortez has quietly and consistently dedicated herself to serving others, leaving a lasting impact on every community she calls home.
In Twentynine Palms, she kept the local food bank stocked, organized meal drives, and personally delivered food to homebound neighbors and families quarantining during the COVID pandemic. When schools closed and many families suddenly found themselves navigating homeschooling, Jillian stepped up to lead a homeschool co-op and coordinated more than 250 events for Marine Corps and local families. She also provided weekly art classes for children who no longer had access to arts education through their schools.
Jillian’s service extended far beyond organized programs. Whenever a spouse welcomed a new baby, underwent surgery, or faced a challenging season, she coordinated meal trains and ensured families felt supported and cared for. Remarkably, she accomplished all of this while managing her own chronic illness. Despite her personal challenges, Jillian never sought recognition or assistance for herself. Instead, she consistently put the needs of others first, personally funding and preparing hundreds of meals and quietly sponsoring families in need during the holidays, providing everything from Christmas trees and stockings to gifts and essential items.
Her passion for serving military families continued after relocating to Jacksonville, Florida. There, Jillian became a trusted education advisor and parent advocate, helping military families navigate school systems and access valuable resources. She partnered with organizations such as Operation Homefront, USO, Blue Star Families, MWR Sports, and her husband’s command to ensure Marine Corps families received the support they needed. She coordinated back-to-school supply drives, provided toys for command holiday celebrations, and was often the first person spouses called when they needed guidance, encouragement, or practical help.
Whether helping families enroll children in school, connecting them with resources, organizing community events, or delivering a warm meal during a difficult time, Jillian embodies the spirit of selfless service. Her compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to others have strengthened countless military families and enriched every community she has been part of.
Jillian’s impact is not measured by titles or accolades, but by the lives she has touched through her kindness and dedication. She is a true example of what it means to serve behind the camouflage, and her efforts continue to make a profound difference in the Marine Corps community.
