March 2013 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The aging brain works in strange and mysterious ways which are as of yet unfathomable to modern science. Two very different stimuli have made me reflect on my first FMF tour, served proudly in the fabled 1st Marine Division (“The Blue Diamond Division” the nation’s most combat experienced division) at Camp Pendleton, California. The first event occurred when an Afghan Ranger I am working with here gave me a unit patch of his with a scorpion on it.

Let’s get something straight: the courage and commitment of women Marines are not an issue.

From helo pilots to up-gunners to crew chiefs to running convoys; Women Marines have participated in more combat in Iraq and Afghanistan than in any American war – and they’ve performed admirably.

But Sect Panetta’s announcement opens the worlds of infantry, artillery, and armor to women for the first time, and the commentators, blogs, and discussion boards are extremely unhappy; ‘using the military to push social engineering’ is one of the more polite phrases used. Are they correct?

There are many different health risks faced by those serving our country, happily there are effective ways to treat and prevent most of these issues. Those in the service and their families often worry about the potential long-term effects of their time in the military. Some veterans suffer mental and physical challenges long after they leave the service. When service members and their families are aware of these issues, they can take steps to prevent them.
