Sergeant Major Richard L. Arndt joined the Marine Corps in 1976 and underwent recruit training at Parris Island, S.C. Upon completion he attended infantry training and was assigned to Company G, 2d Battalion, 2d Marines, Camp Lejeune, N.C. In 1979, Sergeant Arndt was transferred to Marine Barracks, Fallbrook, Calif., as a section chief.

He attended Drill Instructor School at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif. in 1981, and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion. There he held the billets of Junior and Senior Drill Instructor. In 1983, Staff Sergeant Arndt was reassigned as the NCOIC of Close Combat. In 1984 he was reassigned to Drill Instructor School as the Drill Master/Squad Instructor.

In 1986 Gunnery Sergeant Arndt transferred back to 2d Marine Division as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Company F, 2d Battalion, 2d Marines.

In 1989 he transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and held the billets of team leader and NCOIC of Basic Warrior Training (BWT). In 1991 First Sergeant Arndt transferred to Headquarters Company, Weapons Training Battalion.

In 1992 he was reassigned to Drill Instructor School, Parris Island, South Carolina as the Chief Instructor/First Sergeant.

First Sergeant Arndt transferred back to Second Marine Division in 1994 where he served as the Sergeant Major for 5th Battalion, 10th Marines. In 1995 he was reassigned to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines as the First Sergeant of Alpha Battery.

In 1996 Sergeant Major Arndt was transferred to 1st Battalion, 2d Marines as the Battalion Sergeant Major. During this tour, BLT 1/2 deployed with the 22nd MEU and participated in operations Guardian Retrieval in the Congo and Operation Nobel Obelisk, Sierra Leone.

After two years with 1st Battalion, 2d Marines, Sergeant Major Arndt transferred to HMT-204, Marine Air Group-26, Marine Corps Air Station, New River, NC and served as the Squadron Sergeant Major through their re-designation to VMMT-204, the Marine Corps' first Osprey Squadron. In September 1998 Sergeant Major Arndt was assigned as the Sergeant Major for Joint Task Force Full Provider for Operation Fundamental Relief, conducted in Puerto Rico.

Sergeant Major Arndt was transferred to the Marine Corps Artillery Detachment, Fort Sill, Oklahoma in June 2000, for assignment as Marine Corps Field Artillery Detachment Sergeant Major.

In December 2002, Sergeant Major Arndt transferred and was assigned as the Sergeant Major, Marine Corps Recruit Depot and Eastern Recruiting Region, Parris Island, S.C.

Sergeant Major Arndt assumed his final post as Sergeant Major, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Quantico, VA on April 16, 2004. He retired on 1 September 2006 after serving 30 years in the United States Marine Corps. He and his wife Marie have a son Nathan and a daughter Summer.
