THIRTY years ago occurred the war between the United States and Spain, since officially known as the Spanish-American War, and although the World War which has taken place in the meantime has somewhat dimmed the memory of the lesser struggle, it appears appropriate at this time to note the anniversary by a chronicle of some of the events that marked the opening battle of that war and subsequent events in the Philippine Islands.
