IN 1899, having been ordered to join a battalion of Marines for service in the newly acquired Island of Guam, my first thought was naturally-Where the devil is Guam? And although I had a very good world's atlas at hand, it took me some time to discover a fly speck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean near which was printed the name I sought.
