Selection of Officers, A. D. 1815

The selection of officers of the United States naval service, today, for promotion in rank, and the consequent enforced retirement of those not selected, has caused some heartaches but also many a joy. To those who have been disappointed and see in the near future their return to civil life, some consolation may be had from the fact that their lot was not as, what some may call, ruthless as was experienced by those who were not selected under the method of selection of officers used in 1815.
