In Memoriam: Paul John Fontana

Retired MajGen Paul John Fontana died in Craven County, N.C. He was 85. He immigrated from Italy and later was commissioned a Marine in 1936.

In World War II he flew the F4F Wildcat off Guadalcanal and commanded Marine Fighter Squadron 112 which shot down 56 Japanese aircraft. Then-Maj Fontana accounted for the downing of five Japanese planes and became a Marine ace. He would also later fly the F4U Corsair over Okinawa.
