THE FINAL CAMPAIGN: Marines in the Victory on Okinawa. By retired Col Joseph H. Alexander. A historical pamphlet published as part of the "World War II Commemorative Series" by the History and Museums Division, Headquarters Marine Corps

The battle for "The Rock" was thought to have been the "bloody hellish prelude to the invasion of Japan." Instead, it was a bloody hell of its own.

Author Alexander has written a number of books, including "Utmost Savagery: The Three Days of Tarawa," which won the General Wallace M. Greene Award of the Marine Corps Historical Foundation.
