The battle for "The Rock" was thought to have been the "bloody hellish prelude to the invasion of Japan." Instead, it was a bloody hell of its own.

Author Alexander has written a number of books, including "Utmost Savagery: The Three Days of Tarawa," which won the General Wallace M. Greene Award of the Marine Corps Historical Foundation.
