Shoalwater Bay, Australia: 11Th Meu Participates in Tandem Thrust '97

The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at Camp Pendleton, Calif., participated with Australian defense forces March 1-22 in Exercise Tandem Thrust '97 near northeast Australia.

The 11th MEU is currently deployed and includes approximately 2,000 Marines commanded by Colonel Robert B. Blose Jr.

Fourteen U.S. Navy warships and 20 Australian vessels with more than 28,000 troops and 252 aircraft participated in the exercise which was designed to train for crisis action planning and executing response operations in the Pacific area.
