Hispaniola: Treating Thousands in Haiti
Sailors and Marines from 4th Medical Battalion battled disease, malnutrition and a woeful lack of medical and dental care as part of Operation Fairwinds '96, which lasted from July to September 1996 in Haiti.
The battalion's commanding officer, Navy Reserve Captain John Downs, a surgeon, dentist and professor of surgery at Michigan State University, spearheaded the effort and served as backbone of the operation.
