"Keeper of the Flame"

Most Marines, within their heart of hearts, picture themselves as "Keepers of Liberty's Flame," but for one Marine this statement literally describes his life's work. Charlie DeLeo's first visit to the Statue of Liberty was in the fourth grade, and immediately he became inspired by "Lady Liberty." That inspiration never dimmed within DeLeo and ultimately grew to become the passion of his life. All Marines are the "Keeper of the Flame" of freedom in spirit, but in DeLeo's case, he became the "Keeper of the Flame" in both spirit and fact.
