West Africa: Special Purpose Magtf off Liberia

Leathernecks of a special purpose Marine air-ground task force departed in the amphibious landing platform dock USS Ponce (LPD-15) from Morehead City, N.C., June 12 to support Operation Assured Response in Monrovia, Liberia.

USS Ponce arrived later in June relieving the USS Guam Amphibious Ready Group and the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit. The mission of the SPMAGTF is to protect the American Embassy in Liberia and be prepared to evacuate American citizens if necessary.
