He was the last living five-star U.S. general and one of the last of the very senior commanders of World War II. He, among all others, was chosen to lead American troops in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, in France. He eventually commanded four field armies (1.3 million men) in Europe, the largest American fighting force in history. He was General of the Army, Omar N. Bradley.
