MARCH 8, 1965, when the forward elements of the Third Marine Division made an amphibious landing at Da Nang, marked the arrival of the first large-scale unit of the American Armed Forces in the Republic of Vietnam. By the end of the month, these forces were in position around the Da Nang Tactical: Area of Re- sponsibility (TAOR).
