The Marine Shop is part of the Marine Corps Association & Foundation (MCA&F). Besides shopping online, MCA&F members, active duty Marines, family members and Marine Corps fans can visit our two brick-and-mortar stores in Quantico and Camp Lejeune. Shortly after leaving radio school, I was assigned to the 1st Medium Tank Battalion of the 2d Marine Division. I had difficulty adjusting to the close confines of a tank. It bothered me to be enclosed in this hulking 33-ton mass of steel, peering out only through a periscope. As soon as possible, therefore, I made my escape into another mode of transportation. We had a newly formed reconnaissance platoon, and this was for me. It was comprised of a couple of half-tracks and half a dozen Jeeps, and each vehicle required a radio operator.
