Major General Kessler is currently assigned as Commander, Marine Corps Installations Command (ADC I&L Facilities and Service Division). A native of Mountlake Terrace, Washington, he was commissioned a 2ndLt from the University of Washington, Seattle, in June 1980. Following The Basic School and Ground Supply Officer’s Course, he reported to 1st Supply Bn, 1st FSSG. Following his tour there, he reported to Okinawa, Japan, where he served as Operations Officer, DSSC, MCB, Camp Butler, and as an analyst/OIC of the Using Unit Team, FSMAO-3.
Capt Kessler then attended the Amphibious Warfare School. Upon graduation in 1988, he was assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division. While with 1st Tanks, he deployed with the battalion for Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Upon his return from Southwest Asia, he reported for duty as an Inspector with the Department of Defense Inspector General's Office.
In 1993, Major Kessler was selected to serve as the Aide-de-Camp to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General John M. D. Shalikashvili. Following 2 years in this assignment, he was selected to attend the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduation, he returned to 1st Supply Battalion as the OIC, General Account and subsequently the OIC SASSY Management Unit.
In 1999, LtCol. Kessler assumed Command of the Defense Distribution Center, Barstow, California. Following Command, LtCol. Kessler was selected to attend the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University in Washington D.C. Upon graduation in 2002, he was assigned to the 3d Marine Division where he served as the Division G-4 and J-4 for Joint Task Force 555.
Colonel Kessler was selected for Command and assumed Command of H&S Battalion, 3d FSSG, and Camp Commander, Camp Kinser, MCB, Japan in June 2003. While there, he was deployed to Sri Lanka as the Commanding Officer, Marine Logistics Regiment-2, Combat Logistics Group-Sri Lanka, JTF-536 in support of Operation Unified Assistance. Upon completion of his Command tour, he was assigned to Installations and Logistics, HQMC as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Commandant, I&L.
Brigadier General Kessler assumed command of 2d Marine Logistics Group, II MEF on 25 May 2006. From January 2007 to February 2008, he deployed the 2d MLG Forward as part of II MEF Forward and MNF-W in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. In April 2008, he relinquished command of 2d Marine Logistics Group and assumed the duties as Director, Manpower Management Division, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Quantico, Virginia. Departing M&RA in June 2009, Brigadier General Kessler assumed command of Marine Corps Logistics Command on 29 June 2009. In July 2011, he relinquished command of Marine Corps Logistics Command, Albany, Georgia and assumed the duties as Assistant Deputy Commandant for Installations and Logistics (Facilities), HQMC. Upon activation of a new command on 1 October 2011 Major General Kessler became Commander, Marine Corps Installations Command (ADC I&L Facilities and Service Division). General Kessler was promoted to his current rank on 11 August 2010.
Major General Kessler holds advanced degrees in Military Studies from Marine Corps University, an MS in Systems Management from the University of Southern California and an MS in National Resource Strategy from ICAF.
