With Task Force 3/6 at Camp Hansen, Afghanistan: “It’s really a simple mission,” the 3d Battalion, Sixth Marine Regiment commander, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Schmitt, said. “The locals need to understand that cooperating with us and Afghan GIROA [Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan] forces improves their lives, whereas working with the Taliban dooms them and their families to a life of darkness.”
Last Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, Operation Zangle Washat (Forest Fear) kicked off—a multi-week air and ground operation in which Schmitt’s Marines and the Afghan National Army were initially inserted north and east of Camp Hansen into Kerez-y-Saydi (KEZ) and Badula Qulp areas. As the operation is ongoing, this reports the first day’s action.
