The Root: Ballad of the Peacekeeper

On October 23, 1983 the Global War on Terror started with the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut. Three soldiers, 18 sailors and 220 Marines primarily of the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit were killed. One of the survivors was then a staff sergeant named Randy Gaddo, who would go on to retire as a chief warrant officer 4. He has been actively involved with the survivors of the bombing, their families and annual remembrance at the MAU's home, Camp Lejeune, N.C. In October, 2008, the 25th anniversary of the bombing  he wrote an extensive and excellent account of the bombing for Leatherneck Magazine. Also in his spare time Randy Gaddo has his own band in Peachtree City, Ga. Gaddo has written and sings this haunting ballad: The Root: Ballad of the Peacekeeper

Read Gaddo's October 2008 story in Leatherneck.
