Former Marine Named National Teacher of the Year

Andy Baumgartner, a former Marine and kindergarten teacher at A. Brian Merry Elementary School in Augusta, Ga., was named the 1999 National Teacher of the Year.

Baumgartner joined the Corps in 1972 and served as a unit diary clerk at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He completed his twoyear enlistment and then went to college.

"The G.I. Bill paid for the last two years of my undergraduate degree and all of my master's," Baumgartner said.
