The Persian Gulf: Assisting in Operation Southern Watch
Operation Desert Storm was only seven years ago, but tension with Iraq still runs high. U.S. military forces, including the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, continued to enforce the no-fly zone over southern Iraq as part of Operation Southern Watch.
The MEU's six AV-8B Harrier attack jets were busy flying sorties several times a day to ensure no Iraqi aircraft crossed the 33rd parallel as mandated by the United Nations.
