Betty Mathis: Showgirl, Model, Marine

Volume 78, Issue 8
Author:

Listen close, Marines. Betty Mathis has something to tell you. It's about your ears.

Mathis, a Marine during World War II, suffers from a disorder she calls "the terrible noise"-tinnitus.

"Tinnitus is a ringing, a hissing or a hum," Mathis explained. "But the noise has no external cause. It can be subtle or deafening, and it can absolutely knock a person off his or her feet."
