Marine Corps Marathon Xiii

Volume 72, Issue 1

Bob Jordan

Even though the Marine Corps and New York marathons were held on the same day-November 6-the two races are actually a study in contrasts. . . . The "Big Apple's" event has nearly twice as many participants, and a Mercedes Benz and $26,385 go to the winners. The Marines offer their winners a silver cup trophy and a handshake with the Commandant. . . .

The annual Marine Corps Marathon is more than a yearly running competition. It is more like a neighborhood block party, resulting in the run being called "The People's Race."
