Hold Your Breath

Chu Lai-LCpl Gilbert E. VanDyke (Lafayette, Ind.), a grenadier with the 2d Battalion, Fifth Regiment, is alive today because he held his breath until a grenade exploded.

During a company-size sweep near the Song (River) Trau, some 20 miles northwest of Chu Lai, Gilbert was assigned to search a part of the opposite shoreline where a few Viet Cong were believed to be hiding.
