What about Joe Foss???

MOH in WWII (joined the Air Force later - go figure) and then became the FIRST commissioner of the NFL!!!

Joe Foss

He should have been added as well as Daniel Daly two time MOH winner and the one who uttered the immortal words," Come on for Christ's sake, you want to live forever!"

Spoken during the Battle for Belleau Wood, June 1918.

Dan Daly

He was a great Marine, no doubt about it.  However, I don't think he'd make this particular list, as they were going after Marines who also had a colorful CIVILIAN (after the Corps) career.  I voted for R. Lee Ermey, just cuz he made so many movies and tv appearances and repped the EGA pretty hard.  He was so gung-ho that he actually got an 'promotion' to actual Gunnery Sergeant, even though he retired a Staff Sergeant.  Gotta love the Gunny... unless you're in trouble, then you AVOID the Gunny.

Just my 2 cents, which doesn't amount to much, these days...

Great example. There is also

Great example. There is also a display of his heroism at the Museum of Flight in Seatle, WA. He is the most famous "Green Knight" to ever fly.

Dan Daly

Dan Daly should have been listed on this survey along with Chesty Puller.

Who wrote the list?

How in the heck is Smedley Butler or Dan Daly on the list?

Typo

Meant "not" on the list.

FYI - Presley O'Bannon's resting place

Check this out! I moved to Kentucky several years ago from New York and guess who I stumbled upon?

Presley O'Bannon is buried at the Franfort, Ky Cemetary. It sit's up on a ridge overlooking the Kentucky River and the state's capital building. As a matter of fact, the local MCA put up a marker with a huge gold EGA on it.

His gravesite is only about 50 yards from where Daniel Boones remains are buried.

Lot's of Marine Corps Vets here in Kentucky for some reason? Makes you wonder what made him venture out into the wilderness way back then?

Just a little bit of history trivia...

Yeah...someone stole the original and the MCL had to replace it about 1995 or '96. I did a story for Leatherneck when they dedicated it. Very impressive.

While maybe not as well known as the others on the list I would defy anyone who read of his exploits to vote against him.  The Tribal Elder

I agree.  I always considered his story one of the most fascinating in Marine Corps History.  I can't tell you how many times I shared it with other Marines.

In agreement

I think the problem is:  Most people (Marines) are unaware of his life and exploits. '

Maybe a little more in-depth study of Marine Corps History could be initiated by the Marine Corps Institute (MCI).  This would broaden our collective knowledge and inspire more (if that is possible) pride in our Corps.

Sterling Hayden

He is a Marine, served in the OSS, begins lines, and a successfully actor.

Iwo Jima

Sir:

While we are remembering those who were lost and those who returned to us from Iwo Jima let us not forget CWO4 Hershel "Woody" Williams who is the last living Medal of Honor Recipient from the battle for Iwo Jima.

As a Viet Nam Era vet, I only wish I would have been at Phx Sky Harbor the day he was stopped by TSA for wearing his MOA...I would have made a scene and called for the local cops at the top of my lungs!

He was shamed by the USA that day and I would not have put up for it, neither would have any other Marine present.

Shameful day in history.
