Leatherneck Staff Artist, Technical Sergeant Robert Fleischauer, felt that our July cover should be commemorative of the Fourth of July. Since the members of the missile units are probably the Corps' best rocketeers, he picked them to perform a standard Fourth of July action. In April this year (1981), two squadrons of AV-8A “Harriers” sailed for the Mediterranean aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau. Sgt. Stein
How can a man of honor be discharged for telling the truth about the LIAR IN CHIEF who has NO honor?
Sgt. Stein
A man of honor, as you put it, honors the policies of the organization he represents. Our stand as a Corps of Marines is not to get entangled in the political statements of the day as a representative of our Corps. Once he used his rank, USMC in his title, or represented the Corps by wearing his uniform in public he, in the eyes of the American People, became a spokesman for the Corps. While I might agree with him as an american citizen, as a US Marine in a public venue of any type, I am required by proper military etiquette (as we have all been taught since day one) and regulations to refrain from public support of any political party and from making disparaging comments about any elected official and especially our Commander and Chief. Like it or not.
punishment doesn't fit the crime
Honor? You speak of honor as if the cdr in chief deserves the same as a Marine! That type of speech/words only go so far.............Maybe you don't see what a Marine really is.........who would you rather have with you in a fire fight covering your back, a Marine or someone like a cdr in chief? Punishment yes! But a Other than Honorable discharge for stating an opinion? Come on! A Marine Sergeant deserves better!
Sgt,Stein
It's just more political BS, the man is still an American and is still covered by the constitution. He has a right to decent.Give him a reprimand and getoff his back.
Agreed
However, this is not, and should not, cost this Marine his career. Possibly a Smack on the wrist, maybe a drop in rank, but a discharge?? I say Hell No! This president runs around apologizing to everyone, bowing to foriegn dictators and then allows one of The Few The Proud, The Marines to be discharged for voicing the very rights he has sworn to defend as a protector of our Nations Constitution (that's the paper thing POTUS has never read) and not agreeing with his policies. What a small minded President he is indeed! This President is an embarassment to the armed forces, he has done and continues to do more harm to this Countries National Security then any in history! How is it that he is still allowed to sit in the White House is beyond me! When will we wake up America? I Hope it's Not too late!!

Let's do a comparisson. How many soldiers/sailors/airmen/Marines said something nasty about George Bush? And what was punishment then? It seems to me, liberal democrats only demand loyalty and honor for theirs, but when it comes to conservative republicans, we're to keep our mouths shut.

Okay, let me get this right?
We have a Marine SGT who loves this country only using his First Amendment Right denoting what this evil, calculating president has done... a president who has sworn to protect this county... but does nothing to illegals (except gives out millions in “gimme programs” ) nor will the president allow AZ to protect its borders; the same president who told NASA employees he would never shout down NASA; the same person who swore he was born in the US; the same president who has logged more air miles than most airline pilots; the same man you has said he is Christian when is actually Muslim; the same person who has forced all the off shore oil wells to Brazil for China to capitalize on the oil production; the same president who told the Arab nations that "we are a county of Muslims, I know because I am one..."
TRHE SAME PRESIDENT WHO SWORE TO UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION AND PROTECT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE …
If that is the case, that evil person in Washington, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed should all be removed and shot as traitors right next to that stupid sorry ass bitch Jane Fonda!

THERE IS NO HONOR OR PRIDE IN DEMOCRATIC POLITICIANS!
DEMOCRATS ARE NOT CONCERNED WITH DOING THE HONORABLE THING IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM DURING CAMPAIGN SEASON.
NONE OF THEM PAY ANY ATTENTION TO LITTLE THINGS THAT THEY ALL SWORE TO PRESERVE PROTECT AND DEFEND LIKE:
THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION
*ALL DEMOCRATS PLAY OFF THE IDEA THAT THE AMERICAN PUBLIC IS AS DUMB AS A BOX OF HAIR AND HAVE THE ATTENTION ATTENTION SPAN OF A FLASH BULB.
That, Marine, is an entirely
That, Marine, is an entirely separate issue, and one on which I might well agree with you. But that is NOT the issue, and in both your mind and your heart, as an American fighting man, you know it.
The issue is: when you raised your right arm to the square, and swore an oath under the sight of God, to a Federal (hopefully, Marine) officer, you accepted the rule of law, UCMJ and the lawful regulations of the Department of the Navy. And, you gave your spoken and written word, as a Marine, after innumerable lectures, briefings and blocks of instruction about what rights you retained in toto, and which of those were modified to foster the needs and missions of the Naval Service. Among those are both long-standing, and more recent iterations of regulations forbidding any denigration of the CinC and your chain of command. Every Marine understands this. He is not given the chance to misunderstand this.
This particular Marine was, also, informed, counseled, chastised and given direct lawful orders - directly to his face, and in formal written declaration by regulation by his chain on multiple occasions with review at each successive level.
What part didn't this Marine claim to understand?
The moral, civil and criminal standing of the CinC is, or is not, an issue to be discussed by Marines, or any other service's serving members only under the restrictions you have already agreed to under regulations.
There is no leeway here, as much as it may personally disgust individuals such as myself. It is the rules you agreed to, unless or until it is modified under regulations, or changed in US law.
Thus, this entire discussion is not only moot, it is flogging a very dead horse.
Personally, I am a simple man named John Valentine, not 'anonymous.'
All the best, Marines.
Sgt Stein
Stein can articulate whatever opinion he likes, so long as it's his own. But the minute he identifies himself as Sgt Stein, USMC, on behalf of the 'Military Tea-baggers of America," then he's in violation...which you know.
What's also clear from your elegant and nuanced description of Pres Obama, I'm sure you'd be opposing Stein if he targeted any of the GOP candidates.
Failed policy
Ha, bottom line and I see it is hard for some to swallow but the cdr in chief is a failed leader! Period! I mean it is very clear, everybody can see that. And that is why you read stmts like you just talked about or complained about. It is the truth and no matter how you try to spin it, it cannot be covered up. Quotes, like Military tea baggers of america & GOP canditates............so! What the hell has that got to do with a failed cdr in chief or the actual subject line SGT Stein?
failed policy
Must be people commenting on this are people who cant read or understand orders in the service of thier country. Before you comment on this please read what they can and can't do politally representing USMC. He violated more than one in here Directive 1344 of the Department of Defense
SGT Stein
Violated.............did you say violated, are you kidding me? It is very difficult for me to comprehend and accept that we have individuals on active duty today who thinks "violation" are more important than winning wars or fighting them for that matter. Violation! There is no way this kind of thinking from someone has ever, I mean ever been in a fire fight. You don't have a clue! Violation! God! Excuse me but I will comment as I please I don't need your guidance.
Green weenie!!
I think it's all bulls***! Just cuz you like your JOB don't mean you have to love your boss! They just trying to f*** everybody over with this downsize bullcrap! Why cut our jobs instead of giving RECRUITERS some time off to save on money and boat space Smh
AGREED
The commander in chief is a sorry f---K. He is a liar and a thief and is killing our country!
Get him out of office now!!!!!!!!
To add to my last comment...
To add to my last comment... And I'm not jumping on the band wagon... Believe me I'm PRO-Obama
too bad!!!
too bad!!!
sgt. stien
Discharged no. Some punishment yes.
defying directives, orders and articles
Defying directives, orders and articles and printing that he wouldn't follow the orders by the Commander and Chief was about as dumb as it gets. This is not a freedom of speech reason. I would not want to go to war with someone who would not follow orders. That in itself is insubordination and detrimental to all service men. Did he miss the part that was drilled in to him from day one. The chain of command
can't follow orders/directives?
Can't be a Marine. We've all known someone at a higher who just was not suited to the job. Did you stand in formation and give out with a "hell no" when given an order? If you would would you justify it based on your religious or political beliefs? Our good Sergeant screwed the pooch when he went from speaking for himself to draging the Corps int his political corner. Want to be in politics? Get out of my Corps' uniform and have at it.

UCMJ ARTICLE 88. CONTEMPT TOWARD OFFICIALS
Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.
since we are defending Sgt Stein
Well, if you are going to say that the guy should be allowed to go against the pres because he (the president) "...has no honour." then I would also argue that Bradley Manning was perfectly within his rights by exposing some of the military's untruths because they (the military) lied. Just saying...
A thought...
Aren't marines supposed to keep their mouths closed, follow orders, and act as human shields? Sgt. Stein learned a valuable lesson...and I'm sure he'll enjoy his next career fetching my coffee order at Starbucks. Let's seem some hustle "Sgt" Starbucks!
Anonymous ? you would have to
Anonymous ? you would have to be to post this acn of piss
Funny but true
The guy is and id**t. He took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. He was not forced to become a Marine. If a General officer made such statements it would be called a Coup d'état.

Sgt Gary Stein, as an ex Royal Marine bootneck, we welcome you to come to the

Sgt. Stein should have learned from what happened to General Stanley A. McChrystal who lost much more than Stein.
He took an oath to support
He took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. He was not forced to become a Marine. If a General officer made such statements it would be called a Coup d'état. There is no place for this type of public call to anarchy in the military. Let him speak his mind as a ciivilian... but not as a U S Marine.
Have the Marines gone soft?
The Marine Corps I knew would not allow a Marine to disobey orders. I guess times have changed. Maybe they should just make him cleanup after tea and crumpets.
follow orders good or bad?
I praise GOD for the men of all services who disobeyed unreasonable orders during combat situations in Nam many lives were saved by not following orders of inexperienced Officers. Pay attention to the NCO's who have been there You will live longer. Part of my duties in Nam was medivac and I sawa lot of useless death because of some textbook order, the enemy doesn't follow the textbook then or now.
SGT GARY STEIN
WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER WARS! WHEN YOU GO TO WAR YOU TOOK THE OATH. WAR IS HELL! WHAT WAS HE THINKING> YOU RESPECT THE PRESIDENT WE HAVE. KEEP YOUR ISSUES you have after work. IT takes more than one person to change what has happened. Alot of the military men and women have gave their lives without starting issues against the President. COULD HE RUN IT? Could Anyone? SHUT UP! AND SUCK UP YOUR FEELINGS AGAINST THE ONE THAT LEADS US! HELP AND PRAY WE GET PAST THIS. GOD BLESS.
Sgt Stein
He is expressing a view held by many Americans and I suspect many servicemen and women. Sgt Stein has a right to express his views, but should have exercised restraint on posting his views. However, his career should not be ruined because of political correctness. In my estimation President Obama should never have been elected because he never served in the military and has no concept of what the military, let alone the Marine Corps, stands for. Sgt Stein should have received an Article 15 at most. No reduction in grade and certainly should not have been discharged for his actions.

Agree with Poll Results
All the army or marine in the whole world are trianed to obey the orders. As per the rules and regulations no one can speak against their superiors. If they do they get the punishment. To be honest this doesnt look like a good practice but the polls have shown that this is important for any solider to obey the orders. Without such culture of obeying orders without given a thought, you cannot bring the descipline.
