USS Underwood (FFG-36) recently recognized Chief Select Yoeman (SW/AW) Jeremy A. Campbell for earning the Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award.

Campbell was nominated by his fellow 1st Class Petty Officers on board Underwood for this prestigious award.

Recipients of the Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award were selected by their peers for exhibiting the highest levels of excellence in leadership. Chief Select Campbell was more than deserving of this distinction. He is the epitome of a team player, routinely stepping out of his comfort zone and challenging others to do the same. In addition to his job as Ship's Secretary, he is a member of the Damage Control, Force Protection, and Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) Training Teams. During Underwood's CY10 Counter Illicit Trafficking deployment Chief Select Campbell requested to be added to the watchbill to attain his Officer of the Deck qualification.

Always willing to learn, his shiphandling and navigation abilities made him a go-to source of information for other bridge watch standers.

His peers also recognized his high moral, ethical, and behavior standards. During Operation Unified Response in support of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief efforts in Port Au Prince, Haiti, he volunteered to go ashore and assist with the wounded. His assistance in distributing food and medical supplies and as a stretcher bearer was met with graciousness and gratitude by the Haitian people.

Campbell has served with honor and distinction and is admired by his peers and subordinates. His demand for excellence permeates throughout Underwood and results in a stronger, more efficient crew.

Most importantly, Campbell knows and cares for his subordinates. His keen ability to inspire and encourage others has led to the most successful and operationally diverse department on the waterfront, which boasts three VBSS team members, two DCTT members, and three STT members. Furthermore, by challenging his people and by his innate ability to understand what motivates his Sailors, his leadership directly resulted in his department achieving a Senior Sailor of the Quarter and two Blue Jackets of the Quarter for CY09.

Campbell will soon transfer from Underwood to work as Admin Officer at Fleet Industrial Supply Center, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, leaving behind shoes that will be extremely difficult to fill. He is most deserving of the prestige and honor afforded by the award and will be an ideal ambassador to the Navy and Marine Corps Association.
