Was the cigarette Col Ellis held in the original picture that your ad copies removed in order to conform with current trends in political correctness?

Ellis Picture

Not by us. The original photo of Ellis had a cigarette in his hand. Col Avery Chenoweth, the artist of the oil painting based on the iconic Ellis photo was directed to paint it without a cigarette by some unknown and unnamed Marine official. That politically correct decision was made decades ago. In my editorial I refer to the photo and the painting and point out that the Corps does not benefit from opinions that reflect only the party line or political correctness. The oil portrait hangs in the conference room of Marine Corps University. Here are images of the photo and portrait.
