The award is given to the author of the best article written by an enlisted Marine, as judged by the editorial advisory panel of the Marine Corps Gazette, published in the Gazette in the calendar year.

For calendar year 2012, the board selected the article "Contractor Dependency" by MGySgt Robert Chaldekas. The Sergeant Major of the Marne Corps approved the article.

“His article is very relevant to today's and tomorrow's concerns, particularly in a resource-constrained environment,” said Gazette editor Col John Keenan, USMC (Ret).

Chaldekas was awarded $1,000 check, a plaque, and a personal letter of congratulations from the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Micheal P. Barrett.
