AUGUST 2009
715 Broadway Street - Quantico, VA 22134 - 1-800-336-0291

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear MCA Member,

I am happy to report that our first MCAF Annual Dinner held at the end of July with General David H. Petraeus, USA, Commander, U.S. Central Command as our featured speaker, was a tremendously successful way to unveil the new Marine Corps Association Foundation to the public. The MCAF is grateful to the General for taking the time from his busy schedule to present his candid views and help inaugurate the Foundation. Humorous, insightful and very well received by the attending audience, I urge all of our readers and members to take the time to view the Dinner presentation, which we have made available in both the MCAF homepage HERE and also at the MCA homepage HERE.

In other recent events, we were pleased to host our second MCAF Luncheon of the year at Camp Lejeune with LtGen Ronald S. Coleman, USMC, Deputy Commandant Manpower and Reserve Affairs as our featured speaker. At The MARINE Shop in Quantico, we were fortunate to be able to present Colonel Wes Fox, USMC (Ret), Medal of Honor recipient and author of Marine Rifleman and also Courage and Fear at a book signing in early August. The Marine Corps Association Foundation is grateful to both for taking the time to be with us.

We have some exciting future events lined up as well with General Tony Zinni, USMC (Ret) former Commander U.S. Central Command and author of Leading the Charge: Leadership Lessons from the Battlefield to the Boardroom and also The Battle for Peace: A Vision of America's Power and Purpose coming to The MARINE Shop for a book signing on 27 August and on 10 September, Colonel Bruce F. Meyers, USMC (Ret) author of Fortune Favors the Brave: The Story of First Force Recon will also be at The MARINE Shop for another book signing as well.

Finally, on 16 September at the Clubs at Quantico, the Foundation is very pleased to present the Honorable Robert O. Work, Under Secretary of the Navy as the featured speaker at our MCAF Combat Development Dinner.

I encourage all of our members and readers to visit the MCAF Events Schedule HERE to stay current with our dynamic schedule and to get additional event information. Our MCAF professional events are superb PME opportunities, occasions to enjoy camaraderie with some great Marines and are just plain fun. I cordially invite YOU to attend as many of our events as possible and ask you to bring a friend when you do!

Last month, we announced the creation of the Marine Corps Association Foundation in MCA Today. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charitable organization which enables MCA to more fully accomplish our key mission of supporting Marines through supporting the awards, professional development, unit professional library and other related support programs for Marines. A long time in coming, the good news is that donations to the MCAF are now tax-deductible. I encourage all of our readers to visit the new MCA Foundation web site here to learn what the foundation does and I also encourage our readers to consider making a tax-deductible donation on the web or through our recent notepad direct mail appeal.

As always, thanks for your support and please let me hear from you. You can do that by emailing MCA at comments@mca-marines.org.

Semper Fidelis,

Les Palm

Major General, USMC (Ret)
President and Chief Executive Officer

The end result of considerable effort, personal resolve and serious commitment, the title, MARINE, once earned, is not given up lightly. Marines strongly identify with the Corps and other Marines and want to keep their connections to both strong.

Membership in the Marine Corps Association -- The professional association for ALL Marines is the most effective and informative way to keep connected to the Corps and all its activities AND it is also an enjoyable way to do it.

Membership comes with a subscription to one or both of MCA's magazines: Marine Corps Gazette, the professional journal of U.S. Marines and /or Leatherneck, magazine of the Marines. MCA's flagship magazines maintain a solid focus on the Marine Corps, and all of its activities. Reading both magazines is an invaluable means of keeping Corps connections strong.

Our nation continuously deploys Marines for extended periods, creating special needs for those deployed. Deployed Marines can't afford the luxury of extra weight and don't deserve the problems of missed or delayed mail delivery. To help resolve these issues, MCA offers a flexible membership option, which provides continuous support even throughout the duration of operational deployments.

Specifically, MCA's ONLINE-ONLY membership gives ONLINE access to BOTH magazines anywhere in the world via the Internet, and includes all other membership benefits at savings of about 24% off the print edition subscription rates. Active duty Marines should seriously consider this membership option when they join or renew.

And, even if you do choose the traditional print edition subscription option to EITHER, or Both magazines, MCA gives you ONLINE access to BOTH magazines at no extra charge!

Leatherneck and Marine Corps Gazette feature articles of real value and interest to Marines. With articles written largely by Marines, both magazines feature professionally relevant, and highly illustrated articles that keep Marines informed of current issues and the continuing Marine Corps story.

Our Online magazine editions include exactly the same editorial content as the print editions but provide valuable material only available in a web based environment. These include searchable archives of articles all the way back to1916, audio and video feeds, graphic slide shows, interactive discussion boards on controversial issues that ANY reader can join and hot linked key words, allowing additional reading on topics that interest you! We cordially invite all our readers and members to log on to read the digital versions of Leatherneck and Marine Corps Gazette and check out all these extra featurestoday!

Not only does your membership keep YOU connected to Marines, but it is also important to know that YOUR membership dues, directly supports the MCAF Professional Awards Program, which provides incentive awards and professional recognition to over 8,600 Marines annually for professional and academic achievement. The MCAF is the largest awards provider in the Corps thanks to support from YOUR membership!

If you are not an MCA member, we invite you to join! Call toll-free at 866-622-1775, EMAIL us at mca@mca-marines.org, or go online at: http://www.mca-marines.org/join.asp.

We hope you enjoy reading your MCA magazines online this month and don't forget that if you have an iPhone, G1, or other phone with Internet access, you can read them on your phone as well!

Your online Leatherneck and Marine Corps Gazette magazines are literally available at the tip of your fingers anywhere and anytime!

New members mention code NEMTN809. Renewals mention code REMTN809.

MCA'S FLAGSHIP MAGAZINES

In the September Leatherneck, we bring you articles on the major Marine offensive in Afghanistan's Helmand River valley, Operation Khanjar; an innovative firepower package (Harvest Hawk) for the KC-130J Super Hercules; a new perspective on Medal of Honor Marine Christian Schilt in Nicaragua in the 1920s; a visit with the Marines at Harpers Ferry as recalled by the Marine Historical Company on this the 150th anniversary of John Brown's Raid; the Night Fighters at Okinawa; an update on the ongoing expansion of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and much more. It's an exciting issue, so enjoy, because October is going to deliver even more. Among the October Leatherneck offerings are personality articles on legendary aviators Colonel Archie Clapp and Navy Cross door gunner and crew chief, Ernest "Gooie" Gomez. Plus, we'll introduce the Corps' 7th Warfighting Skill through the eyes of Quantico's Center for Advanced Operation Culture and Learning.

Training and simulation are the focus of the October Gazette. Several articles update the training simulations available to commanders today and in the near future. In "Combining Mojave Viper and Desert Talon" Capt. Eric Larsen argues that two separate exercises for different elements of the MAGTF are not efficient or as effective as a combined training exercise. The staff of MMPR updates the process and prospects for enlisted promotions. This is a must read article for all career Marines. Finally Lt Col "Rick" Lindsey argues that given the current examination of service roles and missions, it is imperative that the Corps create a new Chowder Society. The original was a think tank formed by the Corps to fight to preserve the Corps role in the fight over service unification after World War II. To see an interesting film called "Bombs Over Tokyo" made and circulated by the original Chowder Society go to www.mca-marines.org/gazette and click on the "Bombs Over Tokyo" link. Read the article on the idea behind the film in the August Gazette.

MCA CORPORATE SPONSORS

Thanks to our sponsors for their generous support of the MCAF’s Professional Events and Awards Programs

The Marine Corps has a number of legitimate requirements for which public funds are not appropriate. Because of that, non-profit organizations like the MCAF are able to provide important support. The MCAF Awards Program is an excellent example. Totally funded by MCA member dues and MCAF sponsor support, the program provides the funding assets needed to recognize the professional achievements of a large number of Marines in categories formally defined by the Marine Corps.

Large and comprehensive, the MCAF Awards Program provides leadership, performance and academic awards to deserving Marines and succeeded in recognizing over 8,600 Marines and sailors for professional achievements in 2008.

The MCAF Professional Events Program is another example of a program that is primarily supported by corporate sponsors who enable the Foundation the ability to host important professional development opportunities for Marines and our members. Here is a picture from our most recent professional event:

The Marine Corps Association Foundation welcomes corporate support for our professional event program and invites potential sponsors to contact LeeAnn Mitchell at l.mitchell@mca-marines.org for more information.

MARINE TRIVIA QUESTION

Here is the question for the August contest.

Q. Legally too young to join the Marine Corps, he lied about his age and bribed a drunk with a half a pint of whiskey to fraudulently give permission as his guardian to join and served 3 years in the 4th Marine Air Wing and was discharged as a sergeant at the end of the war. Following his USMC service he enrolled in an elite west coast university on the GI Bill but was deemed ineligible for a degree because of the lack of High School diploma. Following college, he bought a one-way ticket to Paris and became a humorous columnist achieving wide fame on both sides of the Atlantic for his wit and sarcasm. His column explaining the Thanksgiving holiday to the French was so popular that after he became famous it was re-run every Thanksgiving during his lifetime. Who is he?

A.

The first person to e-mail the correct answer to comments@mca-marines.org will receive an exclusive MCA Coin. Please include your name and address in your e-mail. Good luck!

Here's our July trivia question reprinted for ready reference:

Q. A blue diamond arrayed with 5 star points and a central number with a famous location centrally imposed.  What am I?

A. The Emblem for the 1st Marine Division.

Congratulations to Tim Politis of Scarborough, Maine for being the first with the correct answer.
