Sergeant Major Bennett’s 30-year Marine Corps career has taken him into all the components of the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) in CONUS and OCONUS, from training exercises to combat operations during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
He is a native of Stamford Ct, and enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 1, 1971 and underwent training at 3rd Recruit Training Battalion (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of Recruit and Infantry Training Schools, Camp Geiger, North Carolina and San Onofre, Camp Pendleton, California, he was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines and later to Lima Company 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines where as a Sergeant of Marines, he was honorably discharged from active duty in August 1973.
Upon return to active duty in 1976,as a Lance Corporal he served with the following units, Echo Company 2nd Battalion 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California, where he was meritoriously promoted back to the ranks of Corporal and Sergeant, before reporting to Fox Company 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Camp Schwab, Okinawa Japan.
In 1979 as a Staff Sergeant he reported for duty as a Drill Instructor on Parris Island, South Carolina, with Alpha Company 1st Recruit Training Battalion, where he was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Series Gunnery Sergeant.
In May 1982 he was transferred as a Gunnery Sergeant to Norfolk, Virginia for duty as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor for newly formed NROTC Unit Hampton Roads.
Completing his tour of duty with the Midshipmen in July 1986, the newly promoted First Sergeant reported to the 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he would serve as the Company First Sergeant for the 2nd Marine Regiment and later with Fox and Weapons Companies 2nd Battalion 2nd Marines.
In March 1992 he was promoted to Sergeant Major and reported for duty with Support Battalion, The Basic School and subsequently reassigned in May 1994 to Officer Candidate School. In April 1996 he was transferred to Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, South Carolina for assignment as the (MAG 31) Marine Aircraft Group 31 Sergeant Major.
In December 1998, he transferred to HQMC for duty as the Inspector General Sergeant Major for the Marine Corps. In November 1999, he was transferred to Quantico, Virginia where he assumed duties as the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command. He transferred to the retired list on June 1st 2004.
Sergeant Major Bennett currently serves as the Marine Corps Association Area Representative for the Quantico/National Capital Region.
