A fleet of trucks was needed to transport Dr. Felix de Weldon’s original model of the Iwo Jima flag-raising statue from the sculptor’s home in Newport, R.I., to the grounds of the Marine Military Academy at Harlingen, Texas. After the statue’s arrival, a nearly around-the-clock effort by skilled workmen was required in order to have the memorial reassembled and ready for dedication ceremonies on April 16, 1982.
In April this year (1981), two squadrons of AV-8A “Harriers” sailed for the Mediterranean aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau. Purpose of the cruise was to demonstrate the Navy/Marine Corps team’s capability to augment naval forces in any area of the World on short notice and to provide at-sea training for Marine Harrier pilots.
The cover of Leatherneck’s Bicentennial issue is an oil painting by the late Colonel Donald L. Dickson, USMCR. The painting depicts General George Washington’s Colonial troops at Gadsby’s Tavern in Alexandria, Va., during the French and Indian War.
Sightseeing tours for the men of the Marine Barracks, San Juan, Puerto Rico, include a trip to the El Morro Fortress. San Juan is now retired as a Post of the Corps.
The Marines in Vietnam have found that the programs which work best are those which operate close to the people. Our July cover is a mixed media (acrylic and charcoal) by Art Editor James L. Hopewell. It catches the spirit of Marines who enjoy their relationship with the Vietnamese around them.
In Naples, Italy, Marines are responsible for the internal security of the Headquarters of NATO’s Southern European Command, while the elite Carabinieri Corpa provides external security. PFC Robert M. Mallard’s NATO shield was admired by a Carabiniere as the two men prepared to take up their side-by-side posts at the entrance of the imposing NATO Headquarters, which appears in the background of this cover.

January 2002: The Marines engraved another mark in the rich history of the Corps when they came from more than 400 miles offshore to establish a forward operating base south of Kandahar in the war on terrorism. The Marine CH-46 helicopter on the cover, photographed by PH1(AW/SW) Greg Messier, USN, fought in the desert sand to land and resupply Marines such as the ones (inset) photographed by Sgt Joseph R. Chenelly.
January 2001: This firefight during the Frozen Chosin Reservoir Campaign of 1950 was painted by “Chosin Few” veteran Jack Cannon, who served with Company B, 1st Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment and resides in the warmer climes of New Mexico. The cover was part of Leatherneck’s 50th anniversary salute to the Korean War veterans.

January 1982: Participants in the Sixth Annual Marine Corps Marathon presented a colorful spectacle as they began the 26-mile, 385-yard run in Washington, D.C., November 1, 1981. The cover photo, by Tom Bartlett, was taken from a bridge overlooking Highway 50 about a half-mile from the starting line.
January 1981: Nearly 7,800 runners participated in the Fifth Annual Marine Corps Marathon held in northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. The oldest finisher was 78; the youngest was 10. Leatherneck staffer Ron Lunn pre-positioned himself near the Nation’s Capitol to photograph runners during their 14th mile of the 26-mile, 385-yard course.
January 1972: This month’s cover, by Marine Combat Artist Peter Gish, shows members of the New Corps sightseeing in the Old World. While on liberty in Athens, Greece, the 3d Bn, Eighth Marines, were able to tour the Erektheon Porch and Cariatides. The water color is from the U.S. Marine Corps Combat Art collection.

A man of honor, as you put it, honors the policies of the organization he represents. Our stand as a Corps of Marines is not to get entangled in the political statements of the day as a representative of our Corps. Once he used his rank, USMC in his title, or represented the Corps by wearing his uniform in public he, in the eyes of the American People, became a spokesman for the Corps. While I might agree with him as an american citizen, as a US Marine in a public venue of any type, I am required by proper military etiquette (as we have all been taught since day one) and regulations to refrain from public support of any political party and from making disparaging comments about any elected official and especially our Commander and Chief. Like it or not.

Honor? You speak of honor as if the cdr in chief deserves the same as a Marine! That type of speech/words only go so far.............Maybe you don't see what a Marine really is.........who would you rather have with you in a fire fight covering your back, a Marine or someone like a cdr in chief? However, this is not, and should not, cost this Marine his career. Possibly a Smack on the wrist, maybe a drop in rank, but a discharge?? I say Hell No! This president runs around apologizing to everyone, bowing to foriegn dictators and then allows one of The Few The Proud, The Marines to be discharged for voicing the very rights he has sworn to defend as a protector of our Nations Constitution (that's the paper thing POTUS has never read) and not agreeing with his policies. What a small minded President he is indeed! This President is an embarassment to the armed forces, he has done and continues to do more harm to this Countries National Security then any in history! How is it that he is still allowed to sit in the White House is beyond me! When will we wake up America? I Hope it's Not too late!!

That, Marine, is an entirely separate issue, and one on which I might well agree with you. But that is NOT the issue, and in both your mind and your heart, as an American fighting man, you know it.
The issue is: when you raised your right arm to the square, and swore an oath under the sight of God, to a Federal (hopefully, Marine) officer, you accepted the rule of law, UCMJ and the lawful regulations of the Department of the Navy. And, you gave your spoken and written word, as a Marine, after innumerable lectures, briefings and blocks of instruction about what rights you retained in toto, and which of those were modified to foster the needs and missions of the Naval Service. Among those are both long-standing, and more recent iterations of regulations forbidding any denigration of the CinC and your chain of command. Every Marine understands this. He is not given the chance to misunderstand this.
This particular Marine was, also, informed, counseled, chastised and given direct lawful orders - directly to his face, and in formal written declaration by regulation by his chain on multiple occasions with review at each successive level.
What part didn't this Marine claim to understand?
The moral, civil and criminal standing of the CinC is, or is not, an issue to be discussed by Marines, or any other service's serving members only under the restrictions you have already agreed to under regulations.
There is no leeway here, as much as it may personally disgust individuals such as myself. It is the rules you agreed to, unless or until it is modified under regulations, or changed in US law.
Thus, this entire discussion is not only moot, it is flogging a very dead horse.

Defying directives, orders and articles and printing that he wouldn't follow the orders by the Commander and Chief was about as dumb as it gets. This is not a freedom of speech reason. I would not want to go to war with someone who would not follow orders. That in itself is insubordination and detrimental to all service men. The Marine Corps I knew would not allow a Marine to disobey orders. I guess times have changed. Maybe they should just make him cleanup after tea and crumpets.

I praise GOD for the men of all services who disobeyed unreasonable orders during combat situations in Nam many lives were saved by not following orders of inexperienced Officers. Pay attention to the NCO's who have been there You will live longer. Part of my duties in Nam was medivac and I sawa lot of useless death because of some textbook order, the enemy doesn't follow the textbook then or now.

He is expressing a view held by many Americans and I suspect many servicemen and women. Sgt Stein has a right to express his views, but should have exercised restraint on posting his views. However, his career should not be ruined because of political correctness. In my estimation President Obama should never have been elected because he never served in the military and has no concept of what the military, let alone the Marine Corps, stands for. Sgt Stein should have received an Article 15 at most. No reduction in grade and certainly should not have been discharged for his actions.

Agree with Poll Results
All the army or marine in the whole world are trianed to obey the orders. As per the rules and regulations no one can speak against their superiors. If they do they get the punishment. To be honest this doesnt look like a good practice but the polls have shown that this is important for any solider to obey the orders. Without such culture of obeying orders without given a thought, you cannot bring the descipline.
