Leatherneck Reader Submissions: 236th Marine Corps Birthday
Wayne Lawson and his wife pose with Marines at the third annual "informal" birthday bash at the Irishman Tavern in Everett, Washington. This year about 80-100 local Marines, their families, and friends attended. Lawson. who served in the 7th Marine Regiment in the Chosin Reservoir, was the guest speaker for the celebration.

Local Marines, their families, and friends celebrate the 236th birthday at the Irishman Tavern in Everett, Washington. The Irishman changed the name of the business to the "Tun Tavern" in honor of the birthday.

The celebration included a cake cutting with first pieces going to the youngest and oldest Marines present, toasting to the Corps with Irish whiskey, a bugler playing the hymn- along with enthusiastic singing by everyone.

The servicemembers at Shindand Air Base, Afghanistan, recently held a Marine Corps Ball to celebrate the 236th birthday of the Marine Corps as several of their security unit are Marine veterans. The cakes were pre-made and decorated at the DFAC. Col Holkaj, 838th Group C, base commander, was their guest of honor.

Servicemembers at Shindand Air Base, Afghanistan, celebrate the 236th Marines Corps birthday with a cake-cutting ceremony. The week prior to the birthday, three Marines showed up as part of the training mission, 2 LCpls and a GySgt. The soldier in PTs, a Marine veteran and current National Guardsman, was the oldest Marine at the celebration.

January 2002: The Marines engraved another mark in the rich history of the Corps when they came from more than 400 miles offshore to establish a forward operating base south of Kandahar in the war on terrorism. The Marine CH-46 helicopter on the cover, photographed by PH1(AW/SW) Greg Messier, USN, fought in the desert sand to land and resupply Marines such as the ones (inset) photographed by Sgt Joseph R. Chenelly.
January 2001: This firefight during the Frozen Chosin Reservoir Campaign of 1950 was painted by “Chosin Few” veteran Jack Cannon, who served with Company B, 1st Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment and resides in the warmer climes of New Mexico. The cover was part of Leatherneck’s 50th anniversary salute to the Korean War veterans.
