The nation needs to understand the true nature of the threat from terrorism and the vital work of the U.S. military overseas in that fight, the head of the Marine Corps said Thursday. "Let me tell you that they (terrorists) absolutely hate you," Gen. James T. Conway said. "There's no doubt in my mind if they could come into your home tonight, they would kill every man, woman and child. That's the nature of the enemy that we're fighting right now."

MARJAH, Afghanistan — Crouched on packed earth at a barricaded Marine encampment, the village elders issued their complaint: U.S. troops had killed an innocent 14-year-old boy. Secretly, the Marines didn't believe them. No matter. They apologized, called the death a tragedy and promised to offer a condolence payment to the boy's family.

Brad Vandehei stood on the edge of the small opium poppy field that serves as a central helicopter landing zone for the new military compound that's rising nearby. "Those are poppies, sir?" Vandehei, 25, of Green Bay, Wis., asked Maj David Fennell as they gazed at the spiked young plants that should be ready for harvest next month. "Let's burn it down, sir."

Corporal Jacob Turbett gave out a single groan of pain before the Taliban bullet, which had pierced his heart, ended his life. Medics had carried Turbett from the bank of dirt he was standing on, where the bullet ricocheted and entered his chest, laid him out on the dusty ground of a small Afghan home, and frantically tried to resuscitate him. Above them T-shirts and woolen sweaters on washing lines flapped in the breeze.

The average cost of Lockheed Martin Corp's (LMT.N) F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Pentagon's costliest arms purchase yet, will soar more than 50 percent above what was projected when its development began nine years ago, the Pentagon's top arms buyer told Congress. The U.S. Air Force is set to formally notify Congress that the program has crashed through a key cost-containment threshold that will force a thorough review, Ashton Carter, undersecretary of defense for acquisition, said on Thursday.

The Coast Guard rescued two Marine Corps pilots on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., approximately 35-miles off the coast of Saint Helena Sound, South Carolina. Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina notified the Coast Guard at about 5:17 p.m., Wednesday.
