July 13, 2012:
This is the Marine Corps Gazette article that Capt Katie Petronio wrote that was published in the July 2012 issue of the magazine. The article has stirred a major debate within the Corps about whether women Marines whould be given the option to chose Infantry as their MOS.
Listen to our very own Andrew Lubin talk to Petronio as she expands on some of her ideas that inspired her article.

Equality
So a combat engineer's job is harder than the infantry, yet a woman can be combat engineer but not in the infantry? You can't generalize women based on your own experiences or the performance of a few. Just like not all men can handle the infantry there are women who cannot either, but there are women that are more than capable. I have met women that can out train, out smart, out run, out work, and out shoot men. We will never know how women can contribute to the infantry if they are not given the opportunity. The military has prevented blacks, women, gays from serving in the past because of fears and the military was proven wrong. Women should be given the opportunity and if they don't make it then at least they got to try like men have tried before them. That is what equality is all about having the same opportunities. You cannot simply say she is weak because she is a woman.
Thanks Capt Katie Petronio for your service. I am sorry to hear the hopes you had as a young officer are now seen as stupidity. I don’t know what happened along the way that changed your mind. I understand your body didn’t allow you to keep going, but you will never know how your body would of reacted if you were in the infantry because you didn’t have the opportunity. Maybe it would have been better for you. You say you are thankful, but why prevent someone else from achieving her hopes. Just because you couldn’t do it? Women would not be where they are today in society if some gave up when it got hard. Even if there is one woman in the infantry, that is an achievement. You should continue to pave the way instead of building barriers. It is not the physical demands of the infantry we should be worried about, but the sexual abuse women currently face, and will likely face in greater numbers when allowed in the infantry. The military is a very masculine cultural full of victimization and discrimination. We need to promote equality.
