Mike Sekletar is an artist from Amherst, Ohio, who along with friend and fellow artist, Ryan Shannon, are currently painting a mural depicting the most famous photo in Marine Corps history, the 2nd flag raising on Iwo Jima in 1945. The artists are completing this mural with no public funding, as a thanks to all the men and women who served our country. The artist chose this image because "it is so smybolic and iconic, not to mention it represents the "greatest generation"."
This mural is the only one like it in the nation, with the live flag and staff extending 14 feet above the building. The artists have installed a 5' x 8' - 48 star flag as well. The painting itself should be completed in the coming weeks. The artists plan on giving back to the Wounded Warrior Project on their behalf, which will be determined when the pavers are sold and the costs are covered.
On Nov. 11, 2011, Veterans Day, a dedication ceremony will be held involving the local veterans organizations and others.
