“Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary.”
—Mahatma Gandhi
With another book in a continuing series, H. John Poole leads us on a journey of understanding asymmetric warfare. Expertly researched and written, this is a capstone integration of many years of in-depth study on the terrorist continuum.
In Poole’s book, “Dragon Days,” he led the reader to the enemy by laying out a building-block approach to terrorism. In this latest writing, “Tequila Junction,” Poole shows us how the communists have infiltrated our lives in an effort to undermine all aspects of our society. Poole expertly lays out how we, as a nation, have alienated neighboring countries by using an iron fist in an effort to ward off things we do not understand.
This book is broken into two distinct parts. Beginning with a historical continuum of information, the author establishes the bedrock for readers’ understanding. Then tying all the underlying behind-the-scenes information together, Poole directs readers’ attention to the conclusion.
By using a systematic approach, the author leads readers down a path where facts replace the fiction that we’ve been told as part of routine media frenzy. Clear and concise, part one reveals the systematic approach our enemies have employed to leverage what we hold dearest, our freedom.
As the author continues to develop this elaborate and well-orchestrated work, readers understand the underlying facts that have led to the “Global Insurgency” that will affect our children’s children.
Poole explains the vital elements of our enemy’s strengths: the communist manifestation, the use of drug cartels and many gang-related activities, as well as the tie to the drug market that annually puts billions of dollars in terrorists’ hands. When understood, they link to form a theme. We need to change our methods of dealing with this threat or we will be dominated.
Part two of “Tequila Junction” amounts to a tactical-technique manual for narco-counterinsurgency. Like the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the Taliban funds itself primarily through drug production. Thus, the book’s later chapters of “Deep-Interdiction,” “Buffer Zones” and “Working a Heavily Populated Area” could prove very useful to the Corps’ current effort to stabilize Afghanistan.
Once again, the factual content of Poole’s latest work is impressive. It is a bastion of knowledge and an outstanding training tool. Poole drives home the message once again that we need to understand our enemy’s capabilities before we attempt to visit violence against them.
