Outmaneuvering the Taliban
With this latest work in his series of books about winning the global war on terrorism, H. John Poole provides some key information so that we can ensure victory in Afghanistan. It is a must-read.
“Expeditionary Eagles” is an exciting book, posing new and fruitful ideas about countering the Taliban and includes events as current as June 2010. A longtime student of the Eastern mindset and small-unit tactics, the author has an exceptional background, providing a basis for the helpful advice on how to quickly win in Afghanistan.
He expertly puts the pieces together in an arena where war is waged simultaneously in the political, economic, physiological and martial spectrums, pointing out that winning is only possible when all these factors are considered.
His advice takes the form of an intelligence and tactical-technique supplement. U.S. planners have yet to realize the power of the Taliban’s grassroots tentacles. To do anything about the Taliban, U.S. troops will have to be widely dispersed into scores of combined outposts in all towns and neighborhoods along major highways.
Acknowledging that there is much corruption in Afghanistan, the author declares that every police and army post along the highway smuggling routes needs reinforcement from a U.S. squad. That presence will provide leadership as well as supervision and help guard against corruption. Over time this historical trend of corruption will ease, but until that time, supervision from U.S. troops is necessary. Therefore, setting a date as an end state as some politicians have done, vice a goal of eliminating the Taliban dominance, will promote defeat in the long run.
Drawing from historically supported events, the author points out examples of past victories such as the successes enjoyed by the Combined Action Platoon program during the Vietnam War, in spite of governmental excesses up the chain.
In Chapter 15, the author focuses on details, going as far as providing an overview of how to defend a tiny outpost against hundreds of Taliban with no artillery or air strikes. When tactically evaluated, his method is sound.
Poole also provides detailed information on what’s going on inside Pakistan and points out how Pakistan is a key to ultimate victory.
Poole’s book is a font of knowledge and an outstanding tool for achieving future military successes. He drives home the message once again that we need to understand our enemy’s capabilities before we attempt to visit violence against them.
I recommend this book to those among us who value liberty and would like to continue our American way of life.
