Possible Solution to ‘What Now, Staff Sergeant?’
You order 3d Squad: “Do not, repeat do not, assault Hill 3. I want you to move west and behind Hill 3 to cut off the escape of enemy forces on Hills 3 and 2. Terrain west of Hill 3 offers protection from fire from Hill 3.”
You then order all of the company’s assault amphibious vehicles to move north to Hill 2 to block the enemy’s escape in that direction. You tell 1st and 2d Squads to continue suppressing the enemy on Hill 2, preventing his escape to the east, but order them not to assault. Finally, you call your company commander and say, “Sir, 1st Platoon took fire from Hills 2 and 3. We are moving to encircle the enemy on both hills from west, north, and east. I recommend you order 2d Platoon to complete the encirclement from the south.”

The company commander replies, “Roger, 1st Platoon, good work. 2d Platoon will complete the encirclement.” He orders 2d Platoon to do so, then turns to his gunny and says, “Smitty, take a couple of Marines and our interpreter into the village and try to find someone who can talk to the needihajum we are encircling. I want to talk them into surrendering. They may be locals, and if so, we do not want to kill them.”
