The Battle of Hill 881

"The 26th Marines inadvertently kicked off the 'siege of Khe Sanh' on 20 January 1968 , when two companies patrolling the saddle between Hills 881-South and 881-North ran into a well-armed NVA battalion."

My name is Parry Weber ( DOC). I was with B 1/1 1 st Mar. Div. I was on hill 881 for about 3 weeks . We left the hill on the 6 th of July 1968. Before we got off that hill we had to have one more fight. I lost my squid. When it was over myself and a Lt with his lower left leg hit badly. The Lt was married to a lady in the piece core. I'm sorry I don't remember names very good. I'll never forget that day ,that hill or my men. 527 Pheasant. Ln. Moro, I'll. 62067. 618 210 0542y

Battle for Hill 881

Let's not confue two battles here.  The battle for Hill 881, later known as the Hill Fights, took place the end of April 1967 - April 30th to be precise.

The "seige" took place in 1968 after, in all of their wisdom, I Corps leadership decided 881 was not worth holding and abandoned the hill, along with 861, to the NVA.

My friend, L/Cpl. Carl Abare was the first marine to the top of 881 in the night time of April, 1967 !

Thank you for your bit of insight and history. My brother, Corp. Thomas Graff, USMC - Ohio was killed here on April 30th '67.

I am planning a trip to Viet Nam next February. I'm am tyring to gather as much information about his time there & hopfully will get the opportunity to see some of these places "first hand". I am anxious to see this country and how it has "evolved", while never forgetting the sacrifices that were made there 47 years ago.

Thank You and God Bless all the Marines!

Echo 2/3 Khe Sanh Photos During Operation Pegasus Requested

My cousin L/Cpl Larry E. Darden was KIA 4/1/68. He was with Echo 2/3 also during Khe Sanh when he died on day one of operation Pegasus. Did you know Larry? If so, were you with him the day he was KIA?

Larry was killed 6 days after he arrived back in country.

I last saw him in early March of 68 just before I left for Parris Island.

I am seaching for any photos that might have him pictured during Khe Sanh, hopefully wanting to contact any Echo 2/3 members that may have served with him.

Best regards,

881 south

In April 67 my company  Mike 3/9 along with Kilo Company were sparrow hawk  out of Camp Carroll.  The word came down to saddle up for a trip to Dong Ha and from there we flew into Khe Sanh.  Mike 3/3 was already there and had assaulted hill 861 and had suffered casualties.  There were Marines on top of hill 881 south and my platoon advanced to the top of the hill to recover wounded Marines.  I came down with one of them wrapped in a poncho.  For two days we watched as Marine Air and artillery pounded the hill and then we assaulted with several columns going up.  It rained and the ground was mud and slippery  ,,,the NVA had abandoned the hill.  We dug in and waited for our packs and supplies to reach us.  I was on the hill until summoned for R and R (May 67).

Mike 3/9 and 881

I to was with mike 3/9 HM3 Arjen Jager on the final assault on 881 and encountered all those dead marines, corpsmen, on top. My picture appears in the long article almost 100 pages that descibes in detail what happened there. Do not remember arriving by helicopter or going to Dong HA first but I could be wrong its 40+ years.

881 south

who are you - i was evacuated in the first fire fight on the way up - was with 1st plt m 3/9- i'd like to talk with you

Re: 881 south, late April 1967

I was a corpsman with M 3/9.  I remember the air strikes on the hill before we eventually occupied it for a week.  One of the bunkers was still intact after all that pounding.   I remember an arm of a Marine sticking out of the side of a bomb crater on top of the hill.  Hard to believe Marines actually made it to the top before they were gunned down.  Doc Hoffman

Hill 881 & 861 - April, '67

I was on the Flight Deck Crew on USS Princeton, and the Marines on our Carrier were flow in Country.  Were any of you on our ship?

My name is Charity Maness. I am an author living in California. I am currently writing a book titled "In Their Words - Vietnam" it is a collection of interviews with Vietnam Veterans, telling their stories, they way they remember...in their words.

I am seeking any info on the Ugly Angels, YL 37, and a hilltop rescue occuring in the month of March or April 1968.

Were any of you there? Do you know anyone I may contact?

As an aside, if anyone would like their story told, you can contact me at charitymaness@live.com.

Thank you so much for your service!!!

Sgt. Stahl

Anyone here know anything about Sgt. Stahl who was with the 4.2 inch platoon on 881 South? I am trying to find him. We served with Whiskey 3/12 1965-66. I know he recived the Navy Cross on 881 South.

Khe Sanh 1968

Did anyone know PFC JA Hall 1st Bat/3rd Div/26th Marines? Do you know where he was wounded in June 68? I don't know if it was a different post rather than Khe Sanh. Thanks to everyone who fought in VN.

26th Marines

I have no info regarding PFC Hall.  By June 1968 the 26th Marines were out of Khe Sanh, so his wounding probably occurred somewhere else. During June 1968, 1/26 participated in two operations, primarily southwest of DaNang near Hill 55.
For more information on 1/26 from the Command Chronolgy, visit www.khesanh.org/chronology/26thmarines/1stbn/index.html
