Education of Executive Officers and Chiefs of Staff

Many thanks to the MCG for running a series of articles over the years that focus on the unit Executive Officer billet.  In the Marine Corps, we spend a good deal of time on the education and training of our commanders at every level, including our general officers through the Commanders' Course, the MSTP training experience and the General Officer Warfighting Program.  What is often overlooked is the key role the Chief of Staff and the Executive Officer play in moving decisions through staff actions to execution.  As a forum for the professional exchange of ideas and best practises, the MCG provides a terrific venue for wide discussion on a full spectrum of issues and actions.  In the area of developing our COS/XOs, since LtCol David Haughey wrote his piece in Aug 88 through LtCol Michael Grice's "The XO:  Where the Rubber Meets the Road," the dialogue has been useful, creative and professional.  We run an Executive Officers' Course at the 4th MLG that lasts two days.  We do it in conjunction with the Executive Officers' Safety Course and so, give the majors four days in the nuts and bolts of their important responsibilities.  Among their peers and with the support of subject matter experts, they gain the insights they need to be successful as the second in command, the stewards of their respective organizations and the chief trainer and mentor for the officers and Marines who constitute the unit staff.  Keep up the good work!

MajGen Tracy L. Garrett

Commanding General, 4th Marine Logistics Group
