General Officer Announcements
On 4 May the Secretary of Defense announced that the President had made the following nominations.
LtGen John R. Allen has been selected to serve as the Special Assistant, Afghanistan and Iraq to the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. LtGen Allen is currently serving as the Deputy Commander, U.S. Central Command, Tampa, FL.
LtGen George J. Flynn has been selected to serve as the Director, J–7 (Operational Plans, Joint Force Development), Joint Staff. LtGen Flynn is currently the Deputy Commandant, Combat Development and Integration, Quantico.
MajGen Richard P. Mills has been nominated for promotion to lieutenant general and to serve as the Deputy Commandant, Combat Development and Integration; CG, Marine Corps Combat Development Command; Commander, U.S. Marine Forces, Strategic Command; CG, Marine Corps National Capital Region Command; Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces National Captial Region; and Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Cyber Command. MajGen Mills is currently serving as the CG, I MEF (Forward).
On 6 May the Secretary of Defense announced that the President had nominated MajGen Steven A. Hummer for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as the Commander, Marine Forces Reserve, and Commander, Marine Forces North. MajGen Hummer is currently serving as the Deputy CG, Marine Corps Combat Development Command.
Correction
A Special Notice in the March issue of the Marine Corps Gazette, “War Memorial in Need of Repair,” listed an incorrect website address for the Marine Corps War Memorial Foundation. The correct website address is www.iwoflags.org.

Two NewMarineNet Courses
On 21 April the College of Distance Education and Training (CDET) an-nounced the activation of two new MarineNet courses: the Blue Force Tracking Basic Operator Course and the Blue Force Tracking Advanced Operator Course. Marine Nominated for Ranger Hall of Fame
LtCol Stanley Wawrzyniak, USMC(Ret), was officially nominated for induction into the U.S. Army’s Ranger Hall of Fame in May. Wawrzyniak enlisted in the Navy during World War II. In 1946, 3 days after his discharge from the Navy, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.
During a career that spanned 35 years and three wars, Wawrzyniak earned two Navy Crosses, a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and four Purple Hearts. Between the Korean and Vietnam Wars he served with 2d Force Reconnaissance Company where he attended Army Airborne School (Iron Mike Award for Outstanding Leadership), Army Ranger School (distinguished honor graduate), and the U.S. Navy’s SCUBA School.
Serving alongside Capt John Ripley in Vietnam, Wawrzyniak saw action in “Leatherneck Square” (the area of Dong Ha, Con Tien, Gio Linh) and the “Rockpile.”
LtCol Wawrzyniak retired from the Marine Corps in 1979. He passed away in 1995.

USS Anchorage Christened
On 14 May the Navy christened the newest amphibious transport dock (LPD 23), USS Anchorage. The ship will support Marine Corps ship-to-shore mobility including the LCAC, amphibious combat vehicles, and the MV–22 Osprey. The Anchorage is the seventh LPD in the San Antonio class.
