II MEF (Forward) Activated

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) is scheduled to officially activate this Friday, assuming operational control of its ground combat, aviation combat and combat logistics elements in a ceremony at the Paradise Point Officer’s Club at 3 p.m.

II MEF (Fwd) will be led by MajGen John A. Toolan and deployed as a task-organized Marine Air-Ground Task Force, with elements from 2d Marine Division, 2d Marine Logistics Group and 2d Marine Aircraft Wing totaling almost 20,000 Marines and sailors.

This activation marks the fourth time since the Global War on Terror began in March 2003 that II MEF (Fwd) will take the lead for counter-insurgency and security and stability operations in the Middle East and the first time for Afghanistan.

II MEF (Fwd) now begins a strenuous pre-deployment training program designed to prepare its warfighters for the rigors of combat deployment as the nation’s primary force-in-readiness. This unit will be replacing Camp Pendleton, Calif. -based I MEF (Fwd) as the Corps’ fighting MAGTF in Helmand Province, Afghanistan early next year.
