DoD Announces the Distinguished Warfare Medal

Description:

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta has approved the Distinguished Warfare Medal, designed to recognize service members directly affecting combat operations who may not even be on the same continent as the action.

Feb. 13, 2013:

The Department of Defense announced today the creation of the Distinguished Warfare Medal to recognize a service member's extraordinary achievements directly impacting combat operations.

Modern technology enables service members with special training and capabilities to more directly and precisely impact military operations at times far from the battlefield. The Distinguished Warfare Medal will be awarded in the name of the secretary of defense to service members whose extraordinary achievements, regardless of their distance to the traditional combat theater, deserve distinct department-wide recognition.

"I have seen first-hand how modern tools like remotely piloted platforms and cyber systems have changed the way wars can be fought," said Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta. "We should also have the ability to honor extraordinary actions that make a true difference in combat operations, even if those actions are physically removed from the fight."

Based on the order of precedence, the Distinguished Warfare Medal will sit directly below the Distinguished Flying Cross. It may be awarded for actions in any domain but not involving acts of valor.

"This new medal recognizes the changing character of warfare and those who make extraordinary contributions to it," said Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin E. Dempsey. "The criteria for this award will be highly selective and reflect high standards."

The medal, designed by The Institute of Heraldry, will be available in the coming months. The signed memo, criteria for the medal, along with the design, can be seen here: http://www.defense.gov/news/DistinguishedWarfareMedalMemo.pdf

Distinguished Warfare Medal

This is an unjustified award especially since it outranks the Bronze Star in precedence.  The Meritorious Service Medal could have been awarded for these drone operators and cyber warriors.  The MSM is being awarded for service in-theater and if it is good enough for the troops with boots on the ground, it is good enough for someone sitting on Hill AFB flying a drone.  No wonder the awards being awarded these days don't have the respect they once did.

Surely you jest...no way

Surely you jest...no way should such an award take precedence over the BS or PH...

Distinguishe Warfare Medal

“Distinguished Warfare Medal”
Object to this proposed medal being ranked above the Bronze Star (V) and Purple Heart. The criteria for its issuance reads very much like the Bronze Star Without the Combat V and I see no reason why that award should not cover this proposal quite adequately.
There is no "ground combat" necessarily involved in flying a drone and if there was it might better fit an Air Medal or B.S. w/V.
Object to the ranking of this proposed award!

whiskey tango foxtrot?

1) I appreciate all who serve honorably

That said, this blows me away.  My father was KIA in Vietnam.  Army took 34 years to belatedly bestow the Bornze Star on him.

2) Are you 'bleeping' kidding me?  You get a medal for sitting in air conditioning, living at home and wacking people with a joy stick that outranks Bronze Star?

How does Pvt. Schmuckatelli sitting in a FOB, eating MRE's, crapping in an ammo can and bathing with baby wipes feel about some REMF living in Nevada pinning this on?

WTF

I totally agree with you and placing it immediately below a Silver Star is asinine.
