Col Francis F. "Fox" Parry Writing Award

Description:

Col Francis Fox Parry, USMC (Ret) served in the Marine Corps from 1941 to 1967, commanding units from platoon through regiment, and learned about initiative in combat up close and personal serving in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. His wartime experiences have been chronicled in his book, Three War Marine (Pacifica Press, 1999). For years, Fox Parry has been championing thinking outside the box. His article, “Initiative in Combat” (MCG, Jun03) was a precursor for the award he personally endowed in October 2004.

The Col Parry Award was established in October 2004 to recognize the best “combat initiative” article published in the Marine Corps Gazette over a 2-year period.

To be considered for the award, the article’s author must have been a participant or a witness to initiative displayed by Marines in a combat zone.

The article may relate to past wars or the present conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The award is to be a check for $1,000 and an accompanying plaque commemorating the award. The winner will be selected by the Marine Corps Gazette editorial board.
