How to show leadership by walking your dog?

I've heard from many people that when you walk the dog, you get her to walk behind or beside you, to demonstrate leadership. When we go for our walks, she is so excited she pulls me along. It's kind of funny because she's so excited, but doesn't help me show leadership. How should I go about getting her to walk beside me while she's excited?
