Casualty Assistance for Families

Major Keith Forkin's excellent article (MCG, Sep '07) points out the major shortcoming of the current Marine Corps Casualty Assistance Program (MCCAP). Simply stated, the Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (CACO) does a great job while on the job - but then the CACO leaves - PCS, re-assignment elswhere, etc. Who takes over? Sometimes no one and the bereaved NOK have to fend for themselves. And, apparently HQMC can't manage all that needs to be done. So, who "out there is available to help out? I think those of us in the retired community (Officers and Sr SNCO's), if organized and networked geographically, would be capable of picking up the CACO's case file and helping out as the situation and needs required. We have the experience of dealing w/Attorney's, Doctor's, Administrator's, etc and cutting through "red tape" and the like. And, in many cases we have the time to do so. I would like to hear from anyone w/some thoughts and ideas on this subject. Semper Fi, Des Browne
