There were two criteria established for the selection of Marines to serve in the combined action program (CAP): they were to be combat veterans and Marines who would get along with the Vietnamese villagers. The selection process was difficult because "...officers were aware from their own surveys that 40 percent of the Marines disliked the Vietnamese. The problem was particularly accute among the small-unit leaders - the lieutenants and sergeants - whose opinions had considerable effect on their men." (West, F. "Bing" J., Jr., [I]The Vilalge[I], Pocket Books, 1972, p. 13)
In light of the above, will the selection criteria for those Marines who will be assigned to the Foreign Military Training Unit and/or the Security Cooperation Education and Training Center be effective?

Is there now a specific screening process? If yes, please share.

In the past few years, it has often seemed that Marines are randomly selected for advisor duty. It'd be great if this has changed based on what you hinted at from The Village.

I know of many Marines that have openly volunteered for advisor duty, with a good deal of combat experience, and all have been told no, at least for the time being.
