MCHF Leatherneck History Series: Women In The Marine Corps – Current Operations In Iraq And Afghanistan

As part of its MCHF Leatherneck History Series program, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is hosting “Women in the Marine Corps – Current Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan” on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation will observe Women’s History Month with a panel discussion focusing on the service of women in today’s Corps. The evolving role of female Marines, including specialized support to ground units and leading in Marine aviation, has made the service of women in the Corps ever more critical and valuable. Join the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for an in-depth and lively discussion on women in the Marine Corps with this impressive panel.

Panelists will include the following:

  • RDML Margaret Kibben, CHC, USN, the 18th Chaplain of the United States Marine Corps and Deputy Chief of Navy Chaplains
  • LtCol Julie Nethercot, USMC, battalion commander (Afghanistan)
  • Capt. Victoria Sherwood, USMC, one of the first women Marines to serve on a Female Engagement Team (FET)
  • MSgt Julia Watson, USMC,who developed and implemented the Iraqi Women's Engagement Program (IWE) and first female to win the National Service Rifle Championships
  • Ms. Sara Sheldon, author of “The Few. The Proud. Women Marines in Harm's Way”
  • Major Jennifer L. Marino, USMC, copilot for the first and only all-female Marine One crew 

The evening will begin with cocktails, followed by dinner and viewing of a film. A panel discussion will follow the film in Scuttlebutt Theater.
