Families Of U.S. Military Invited To Participate In Study

Pilot Study Examines Impact of Deployment on Families
Military deployment of a parent poses significant stress to a family, including anxiety and depression that may negatively impact parenting behaviors and relationships, according to Candice Alfano, associate professor in clinical psychology at the University of Houston (UH) and director of the Sleep and Anxiety Center for Kids (SACK).
“Over the past decade more than two million U.S. military servicemembers have deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq as part of the War on Terror. Approximately the same number of children has had to cope with parental deployment, in some cases multiple times” said Alfano. “The media often focuses the grave physical and mental risks that soldiers face during deployment, and rightfully so. But there are other stressors and risks that servicemembers face here at home also deserving of our attention– specifically risk to the adjustment and well-being of their families.”
Alfano serves as principal investigator for a pilot study examining the impact of deployment on families titled, “Risk and Resilience in Military Families.” The study aims to contribute to understanding of the effects of single and repeated deployments on families by examining relationships between deployment, child behaviors and emotions, parenting stress and practices, family relationships, sleep patterns, and coping within the family. Alfano hopes that findings from the study might be used to develop effective prevention/intervention programs for military families struggling with the long-term effects of war.
“These families have endured lengthy separations, multiple relocations, disruption in family routines, and the very real threat of harm to their loved one, but we know very little about how these unique stressors impact children,” she said. Alfano also points out that stress and hardship do not necessarily remit when servicemembers return home. “A parent’s new physical and/or psychological disability, occupational and financial stressors, and altered family roles have the potential to create more long-term challenges for families.”
A unique aspect of the study is that information from every member of the family will be collected, as compared to previous studies that have been based solely on parent reports. Another distinctive feature is its focus on sleep. Alfano notes that, “Insomnia is the most common problem reported by soldiers after deployment, and when you do not get adequate sleep, every single aspect of your life can be negatively impacted. It affects your physical health. It affects the way you parent. It affects the way you deal with stress and conflict.” However, it is not only servicemembers who experience problems sleeping. “Research shows that children struggling with emotional problems tend to also struggle with sleep. In fact, sleep can be the first place that signs of stress pop up.”
The study will also examine specific types of coping strategies used within families. “We know that some kids deal with deployment better than others, and we want to learn from these children so that we can help the kids who cope less well,” she said.
Alfano is a licensed clinical psychologist and expert in sleep and anxiety disorders, whose research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DoD). She is the co-author of the book, “Child Anxiety Disorders: A Guide to Research and Treatment,” and co-editor of the book, “Social Anxiety Disorder in Adolescents and Young Adults: Translating Developmental Science into Practice.” She also serves as associate editor of the Journal of Anxiety Disorders.
Military families being recruited are asked to complete a packet of confidential questionnaires by mail. No in-person visits are required and each family member (active-duty/reservist/veteran servicemembers, spouses/partners, and children) will receive a $10 gift card for their participation. Families eligible for participation include those with:
- At least one parent who has deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and/or Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF)
- At least one child between the ages of 2 and 17.

Thank you so much for taking the extra time and making the extra effort
to ship another hat to me for my husband last week. The second hat
arrived last Thursday... and he was tickled with it. Although it may be
"only a hat" it is a very special hat in many ways. He will always be a
proud Marine dad, and your kindness is very much appreciated.
Just a quick note of thanks to Patty Everett. I arrived home from a week vacation to find a package from the Marine Corps Association. I was expecting to find one of the magazines I requested, however, I was pleasantly surprised to discover both magazines were inside. In a time when it seems no one cares about customer satisfaction I am gratified to discover that customer service is not a lost art at the MCA. Once again I thank you for your efforts on my request. It may have been thing but the effort made a huge impression.

Member saying thanks to our Customer Service Representative, Skylar Hand.
Thank you so much for your help!!! I think you should be commended for your excellent customer service! You were extremely helpful and I was about to get upset about my order but you handled it before I could say anything. You are the best. Thanks again!!!
I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone at the association for sponsoring the Ground Awards Dinner on 3 June at the Crystal City Marriott. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were tremendously pleased with the hospitality shown to us and the great accommodations. As well, I wanted to thank the association for the DVD of the event that was mailed to me. It is something that I will keep and treasure for the rest of my days. Again, thanks for everything.

You have been the easiest person I have ever dealt with since I have started MWR out here. You were very quick to respond to my every question and very knowledgeable about your work for an order over a phone that was my greatest experience. If you were in the Marine Corps Skylar I would write you up for a meritorious promotion. I will surely write it in my books to pass the word to the next MWR rep to continue the membership with you guys.

Colonel Ford, I have to pass this on because I'm in shock that I was able to Connect (on the first Ring), Chat and concluded my business with "Sharon" in less than 30 seconds, at the MCA-Office. I was taken by surprise. Why, I'm Not used to anyone answering the phone especially on the first ring. AND...a human being...a lovely lady with a disarming voice, which at first I thought was a recording. WOW! I commend THE MCA for doing such an outstanding service for its members...make me proud. Just think...I was not asked "if I knew my parties Extension."?
Wish I had a Blog...I would spread around how delighted I am. What transpired to me today is Rare, just doesn't happen anymore. See, I'm so impressed I'm blitzing you here.
I'm so pleased to see all the great merchandise you are stocking and the awesome promotions. Your store was dissappointing a few years ago and I shopped only at Sgt Grit.
Now, I can find what I am looking for with you guys.
Thanks for the email; I purchased the two Marine Corps. Cups for my brother who served with the First Marine Div. in Vietnam . He was very pleased with the cups and I was very impressed with the purchase. The online catalog did not do the product the justice it deserved. Thanks again and I am sure you will hear from me in the future.
I received my Dress Blues I ordered from The Marine
Shop in the mail today. And I just wanted to write and tell everyone there
that you all did a great job! Everyone from the tailors, to the customer
service reps. I am highly impressed with the quality and tailoring of your
uniforms. I will definitely keep coming back to The Marine Shop in the
future for uniforms!
