The recent decision by the L.A. Times to publish the photographs of American soldiers posing with Talib body parts re-ignited the firestorm raised by the Marine urination photographs: is the American media anti-military and putting our troops at risk, are, were the newspapers standing up to Pentagon pressure and to be commended for demonstrating the value of a free press, or are these acts excusable due to the stress the Marines and soldiers are experiencing?

It’s more than just sending boxes of candy for the Marines to throw to the Afghan kids, or a body count of Taliban killed - success in Afghanistan will come only when the Afghan are convinced that co-operating with America will give them a better life.

I’m writing this from 29 Palms, where I’m enjoying myself at yet one more brutally hot Marine base.  But this is a different sort of trip for me; I’ve swapped flak, Kevlar, and boondockers for grandson, girlfriend, and pool sandals; we’re spending the week visiting my son and his wife. They got married a few months ago when I was in Helmand Province, so we’re adding “happily married” to our Rites of Passages card that already includes “Marine” and “combat veteran.” It’s a trio of accomplishments I hope many of you Marine parents are also enjoying!

To default or not default…why was that even a question? But finally the debt crisis was resolved, the can has been kicked forward yet one more time, and within minutes after the vote, our brave senators and congressmen & women fled Washington to explain to their infuriated constituents how it was all the fault of the other side.

Patrol Base KT-4. It stands for "Key Terrain # 4," and as Regimental Combat Team # 1 (RCT-1) continues to expand the Marine presence in southern Helmand Province, KT-4 is 1st Battalion, Third Marine Regiment's southern-most patrol base in Afghanistan. It's one of some 180 or more small patrol bases now dotting the central and southern part of the Helmand River Valley.

The prior two days had been ugly. If I ate, it came back up. If I drank, it didn’t stay with me very long. And I had a fever. Rest? See a doc? No, I thought the smart move was to go out on a midday patrol.

COP Sharp. It took longer than I hoped, but after arriving at Camp Leatherneck, I was able to make my way south, and am currently in Helmand Province, Garmsir District.

It’s not a question of whether or not women belong in the military. Women serve, and serve proudly and bravely today, and frankly the Armed Forces are lucky to have them. They’re pilots, logisticians, FET’s, Intel chiefs, PAO’s, and in these and other MOS’s, the enlisted, senior enlisted, and officer ranks are improved by their presence.

And in Iraq and Afghanistan they’ve served in combat; fighting as up-gunners on convoys, helo pilots - and they’ve done very well.
